The Uruguay striker Luis Suarez is believed to have injured his knee joint during Uruguay’s pre-World Cup training camp. He is likely to undergo surgery on Thursday. It is indeed a huge blow to Uruguay and to him as well. It could be a major worry for his club Liverpool also.
Uruguayan TV are reporting that Suarez had an MRI which revealed that the meniscus in the knee is damaged. The team doctor decided surgery as a necessity.
Much will depend upon the seriousness of the injury and how Suarez reacts after post operative period.
Suarez could even go under immediate surgery, with journalist Martin Charquero reporting that it has already been scheduled for 7:30 am Uruguayan time.
The recovery time after meniscus surgery is four to six weeks. It means Suarez could face a race against time to recover and prove his fitness for the upcoming world tournament.
Suarez’s injury would be a major blow for the Uruguay as he is the key figure in attack. His absence would be a great pressure upon Edison Cavani and Diego Forlan. Uruguay will start their world cup campaign against Costa Rica on June 14. Five days later they will be playing against England and then Italy on June 24. If Luis Suarez misses his chance to play in the tournament, he would join a growing list of top unfortunates to have their World Cup dreams shattered.
However, his injury reminds the nightmare of Fernando Torres’ final months for Liverpool. Prior to 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the Spanish striker had his surgery, the same injury Luis Suarez has suffered. Torres returned to the tournament seven weeks later and there was only a shadow of his former self. His off form continued to his club too.
Liverpool fan will be hoping that something similar does not happened with their star Suarez. Liverpool themselves would be wise enough to be involved in Suarez’s surgery and then subsequent rehabilitation. They will be happy to ensure their prized asset is not damaged beyond repair.
Let’s pray for Luis Suarez.
