There has been a huge payment gap between the sexes, which is still not been completely resolved as of 2017. Women are paid considerably less for the same job in almost all aspects of society but their responsibilities remain as their male co-workers. In cases of most sports, this condition applies for female athletes too. The arena of women soccer is not an exclusion. As a simple consideration, we can count David Beckham while being paid millions of dollars a year, the women in this list only earn thousands of dollars a year for the same career in soccer. And this fact is still true when considering additional money from corporate sponsorship. Famous male soccer players earn millions of dollars more than their female counterparts in soccer cleats endorsement deals.

Of course, there is something more than archetype of sexism. As a matter of fact, we all know, women’s sports aren’t watched by as many people as the male version. Some even may argue that women aren’t taught to stick up for themselves during salary negotiations.

Whatever the reasons, we are trying here to build up a short list of 10 highest paid female soccer players in 2017.

  1. From what I gather, yes the men are overpaid per year for playing the sport (((they love, and would still play for a lot less money if that were the case))). All these women are worth millions though. Basically what has happened is they have said, “Here we will pay you this much money TO PLAY… leading to becoming famous and earning the real money with endorsements if they are liked by the public. All women AND MEN shouldn’t earn more than $80,000 a year. IN EVERY SPORT!!! You want real money…practice, stand out to the public, be a GOOD role model, THE “BIG” MONEY WILL COME. If your not willing to play the sport you love for for $80,000 a year as your job…you don’t truly love the sport you are playing.

  2. How does Hope Solo have a multi-million dollar net worth on $22,000 per year gross pay? That’s like Donald Trump showing a $0.00 net income while telling people he’s a billionaire. What I hear the article saying is that the men, like many other sports, are enormously overpaid. The pay should be made based on the number of fans they draw plus a percentage of merchandising. Do that for each sport and then everyone can shut the hell up.

  3. This article is supposed to be about a gender gap in pay? I agree there is a problem here but the first thing mentioned about the first athlete was not of skill or of pay but of attractiveness. It is not a crime to mention how attractive she is but leading your article with that is highly discrediting to your central argument.

  4. Would you sell your house with everything you have right now for a smaller house with nothing in it in a suburb you know nothing about? People aren't going to financially invest in what haven't proven to bring in revenue, how much financial support is there for men's netball? Though that being said it's still pretty ridiculous the tiny support that many women's sports get

  5. These numbers are absolutely bogus. If the author had done some basic research they would have looked up the US Soccer Federation salary disclosures. They have to tell you the top 20 paid people as a not for profit. According to tax reports for 2012-2013 financial year. The base salary for Alex Morgan was 100,484…Sauerbrunn 92788…Rampone 90830…The USWNT won the olympics and with other bonuses received an addtional 182083 in bonuses so they 3 above made 282,564…274,871 and 272,913. These payments were based on their 2006 thru 2012 Dec. contract.

That contract said US Soccer must pay do the following for US Womens Players

    Spend 1.28 mil in salaries
-14 players are guaranteed a minimum of 70K
-6 players guaranteed minimum of 50K
-up to 4 additional players guaranteed minimum of 30K
    -1K win bonus per game
-10K roster bonus per player for all wcup and olympic qualifying tournaments
-win bonus per player for wcup and olympic qualifying tournaments of 50K for 1st, 30K for 2nd, 10k for 3rd
-team win bonus of 1.2 million split among roster for Wcup and Olympics

The new contact 2013-2016 is assuredly slightly better than the old one listed above

    • I agree with you that some of these girls make way more per year, but that would include NWSL, US, and endorsements. The article is only stating what they make during one season with their NWSL team.

  6. Wise Hok Wai Lum If there was as much financial support, and backing, for women's sports as blown on men's sports, there would be the support. But misogyny prevails. We keep perpetuating the crap mentality that women just don't draw the same crowds. It is because the money is poured into the men's sports and we don't stand up and boycott the men's sports until there is some equality found.

  7. they do… like most players in the lower leagues in mens football except these girls are the best women players in the world but honestly, its just impossible to pay them highly when the audience is so much smaller. It is getting a lot better though i think, once you can get more sponsorship and these girls can become as well known as the guys i believe the cash will come in

  8. It iis inspiring to watch these skilled international women playing at such a level. In a game where the men are revered and paid astronomical sums of money I feel these female athletes earn every dollar they are paid. Young girls find encouragement to enter this sport and these professional women are a perfect role model for them. My thanks and adoration to the sponsors and coaches for their contributions to the success of the sport. Thanks ( from former midfielder)

    • The author didn’t do basic research of US Soccer federation minimum salaries guaranteed under the CBA. ie…14 players are guaranteed a minimum of 70K…Alex Morgan was making 100K salary from USSF 3 years ago under their old contract. I doubt she took a pay cut after winning Olympics and scoring 20+ goals that year.
